Stages of the virus
After the itchy, tingly stage, the site of the cold sore gradually develops into a blister or a small group of blisters, surrounded by red and swollen skin.
After a day or so these burst to produce the typical open sore.
Like a sore anywhere on your body, these sores gradually dry up and form a crusty scab, which is usually a yellow-brown colour.

What is it?
Zovirax Ointment is a prescription-only topical (oral, cream, or suspension) ointment that is formulated for the treatment of cold sores on the lips, caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Zovirax Ointment works by stopping the herpes virus from replicating and spreading to other cells in the body, and is taken as a shot twice daily (every two hours) or as a single dose (4 g once daily). It is most effective when taken at the first sign of a cold sore. It is available in a 5% ointment gel (Zovirax) base.
Zovirax Ointment comes in the form of a single-dose gel containing a single active ingredient called acyclovir.
The dosage of Zovirax Ointment for adults is based on the age of the patient and the severity of the cold sore.
